The
Bologna Section of the Marine Science Institute carries out geological and oceanographic
research projects in the Mediterranean Sea (with particular emphasis on the Italian seas)
and in other areas of the world (Antarctica, Atlantic Ocean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean). A
relevant target is to contribute to the acquisition of the knowledge of the sea and ocean
bottoms. Important themes are aimed: to define the structure and sedimentation of the
Italian continental margins; to underline the climatic variations during the last 100.000
years, to focus on coastal and environmental marine geology, both in the periantarctic
platform, and especially in the Adriatic Sea. In co-operation with the National Geological
Service, the Institute is carrying out a pilot project on the cartography of the Italian
marine areas. Studies of the seismicity and volcanism in the Tyrrhenian help the
understanding of earth geology, earthquake distribution to be used in hazard assessments
of the marine areas. |
