Marine Science Institute ISMAR - Bologna Section

Generalities

The Bologna Section of the Marine Science Institute carries out geological and oceanographic research projects in the Mediterranean Sea (with particular emphasis on the Italian seas) and in other areas of the world (Antarctica, Atlantic Ocean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean). A relevant target is to contribute to the acquisition of the knowledge of the sea and ocean bottoms. Important themes are aimed: to define the structure and sedimentation of the Italian continental margins; to underline the climatic variations during the last 100.000 years, to focus on coastal and environmental marine geology, both in the periantarctic platform, and especially in the Adriatic Sea. In co-operation with the National Geological Service, the Institute is carrying out a pilot project on the cartography of the Italian marine areas. Studies of the seismicity and volcanism in the Tyrrhenian help the understanding of earth geology, earthquake distribution to be used in hazard assessments of the marine areas.

Main Role in ADRICOSM-STAR

Hydrodynamic modelling of the Montenegro coastal, river delta and Bokakotorska Bay areas will necessitate high resolution information on the bathymetry and sedimentological information. The Bologna Marine Science Institute is involved in Adricosm-star project in order to plan and conduct a bathymetric mapping survey of both the coastal area near the Bojana river mouth and the Bokakotorska Bay area using multi-beam and single-beam technology at low to medium horizontal resolution. This role comprising also the planning of the operative meeting to decide the best measuring strategy. On the basis of the seismic and bathymetric preliminary results about 20-25 location will be chosen in both the areas, in order to collect sediment samples in a single season to perform sedimentological and geochemical analyses. Considering the results obtained in these samples some station will be repeat (joust for the surficial sediment) in other seasons. The sediment samples will be collected using gravity cores box cores and grabs. STAR]
